Despite a national affordability crisis, the rightwing supermajority in Indiana spent the last session stripping healthcare from over 400,000 people and making it harder for Indiana residents to put food on the table by scaling back SNAP benefits.
Meanwhile, state lawmakers dedicated to improving the lives of their constituents introduced policies that would bring down utility costs by ensuring data centers pay their fair share, protect Indianans’ privacy at the doctor’s office, and more. But because the rightwing holds supermajorities in both chambers, these policies didn’t have enough votes to pass.
Additionally, in 2025, Trump demanded that state lawmakers in Indiana redraw district maps to hand him two Congressional seats before a single ballot was cast in the midterm elections. While lawmakers in the Indiana House voted to advance this power grab, some Republican state senators rejected this clear attempt to undermine Indiana voters.
In response, Trump took the unprecedented step of endorsing seven challengers to incumbent Republican senators who voted down the redistricting bill. In March, five of those MAGA-backed candidates won their primaries. It’s likely that the rightwing will revive redistricting efforts ahead of the 2028 election in an attempt to hand Republicans all nine of Indiana’s U.S. House seats — and that’s why we must put a check on their power in Indiana this November.
We see an opportunity to break the supermajority in the Indiana House. Flipping four seats to achieve this goal will allow lawmakers in the minority to break quorum — a mechanism they can use to delay or stop the most extreme policies from advancing, including renewed redistricting efforts.
With a strong national environment heading into the midterms, we see a path to ending the rightwing’s unchecked control in this state.
