The federal government rolled back protections. Your state can step up.
Forever chemicals — PFAS — are in the blood of almost every person in the United States, and in nearly half of all tap water in the country. Long-term exposure is linked to kidney cancer, immune suppression, and developmental delays in children.
The Trump administration just rolled back the federal rules designed to protect your drinking water. Trump’s EPA eliminated limits on four types of PFAS entirely. For the two it kept, it gave water utilities two extra years to keep chemicals in your water before they need to comply.
With these rollbacks, Washington D.C. abdicated its responsibility to protect Americans’ health and safety. Now, whether your drinking water is safe depends on your state lawmakers. And in some states, they are already rising to the occasion.
In Wisconsin, after years of negotiation, a bipartisan coalition of state lawmakers reached an agreement to unlock $133 million in state funds set aside for exactly this purpose. The policy passed both chambers, and in April, Governor Evers signed it into law. It includes dollars for testing and cleanup, replacing contaminated private wells, and emergency bottled water for families who have gone years without safe water to drink.
Are your state lawmakers protecting your drinking water?
The States Project builds majority power for state lawmakers who will show up and improve lives. And this year, we are working in more states than ever before, building and defending meaningful thresholds of power wherever it is available to be won.
