We are living through a historic moment.
In stepping away from his re-election campaign, President Biden has prioritized preventing Trump from winning the presidency. For many, the possibility of Vice President Kamala Harris earning her party’s nomination has been electrifying.
While this is a moment to savor the hope in the air, we can’t afford to take our eyes off state legislative races, not even for a second. We’re likely headed toward a tight race, and the presidency itself could come down to who has governing power in key state legislative chambers after November 5.
Regardless of what their voters want, rightwing majorities — particularly in Pennsylvania and New Hampshire, where newly-elected lawmakers can take office before election results are due to Congress — could try to steal the states’ electors to hand Trump the win. Nevada and Wisconsin are also critical to securing the presidency, and each presents unique risks for rightwing election subversion. Winning state legislative races in these and other battleground states could be crucial to upholding rightful presidential election results.
That’s why we must win political power everywhere it is on the line in the states this November.
