TSP Statement on Rightwing Arizona Leader Telling Women They Wouldn’t Need Contraceptives if They Put Aspirin ‘Between Your Knees’

In response to Majority Leader Sonny Borrelli, the No. 2 Republican in the Arizona State Senate, heading into International Women’s Day by telling women they wouldn’t need contraceptives if they put aspirin “between your knees,” The States Project’s Chief Communications Officer Simone Leiro released the following statement:

“Majority Leader Borrelli’s disgusting comments perfectly illustrate the policy goals of Arizona’s rightwing legislative majority: to humiliate and control women. Make no mistake, every Republican Senator who cast their vote for Majority Leader Borrelli and refuses to speak out, is endorsing his extreme, out-of-touch position.

Since the fall of Roe v. Wade, we’ve seen state after state chip away at women’s personal freedoms. We see it in rightwing-controlled states across the country where lawmakers are advancing laws that would ban abortion, shut down IVF clinics, restrict access to contraceptives, and even end no-fault divorce.

Women are put at risk when the rightwing controls our state legislatures. That’s why it’s so important that we invest heavily this year to win back governing power in states like Arizona and empower lawmakers who will protect women’s personal freedoms.”

The States Project is laser-focused on winning governing power for lawmakers that will protect personal freedoms, including the right to contraception. Earlier this session, Sen. Priya Sundareshan (SD-18) introduced SB1362, “The Right to Contraception Act,” to protect the ability of Arizonans to obtain all forms of contraceptives and guarantee the right of health care providers to prescribe them.
