The Stakes

Right now, the rightwing holds a trifecta in Missouri, including supermajorities in both the Senate and House. And in recent legislative sessions, rightwing state lawmakers have used their unchecked governing power to overturn the will of their own voters.

In 2025, lawmakers in Missouri’s rightwing majorities bowed to Trump’s demands that they draw new district maps to hand him an additional Congressional seat before the November midterms. More than 300,000 Missourians signed a petition to put the maps on the ballot through a voter referendum — a process that allows voters to approve or reject the new maps themselves.

But Missouri’s rightwing Secretary of State initially rejected the petition to put the referendum on the ballot. And even after the U.S. Supreme Court ordered the state to use its previous maps in the 2026 election, the rightwing-controlled legislature attempted to use the new maps anyway — causing chaos about which districts and candidates would be on the ballots just weeks ahead of Election Day.

In 2027, rightwing lawmakers will likely attempt to draw new maps again to attack the two congressional districts that Democrats currently hold. Breaking the rightwing supermajorities can stop them from bypassing the referendum process that allows voters to weigh in.

This isn’t the first time Missouri’s rightwing supermajorities have attempted to override the will of their own voters by dismissing the referendum process. In 2024, Missouri voters overwhelmingly approved constitutional amendments that protected abortion access, raised the minimum wage to $15 per hour, and required some businesses to provide workers with paid sick leave. The rightwing supermajorities responded by enacting policies to overturn those voter-led victories and attempting to make it harder for citizens to get constitutional amendments on the ballot.

The Opportunity

This November, we have an opportunity to put a check on rightwing lawmakers who continue to prioritize their own power over improving the lives of Missourians.

We need to flip just two seats in the Senate and three in the House to break the rightwing’s supermajorities in both chambers. Achieving this goal will give lawmakers in the minority additional procedural tools that can serve as an emergency brake against extreme policies, protect the will of voters, and redistricting that will further erode the will of voters and allow for rightwing power grabs.

Breaking these supermajorities this November won’t be easy, but we see a path to ending the rightwing’s unchecked control in Missouri.
