Without any regard for Americans’ safety — the quality of water we drink, the food we eat, whether flights will land safely, or we can even visit national parks — Trump and his billionaire buddies are dismantling the federal government because they want you to believe that government doesn’t improve people’s lives.
The future of our country hinges on our ability to prove them wrong. And right now, there’s just one place where that can happen: state legislatures.
At The States Project, we’ve prepared for this moment. Our strategy is two-fold:
- We’re working with pro-democracy state lawmakers. Our governance work provides the tools and training they need to stand up for their constituents and pass policies that will improve their lives — which they can do, even with a rightwing trifecta at the federal level. As we see rightwing lawmakers pursue MAGA-style state-level takeovers, much of our work is also focused on equipping state lawmakers with resources to block harmful policies from becoming law.
- We’re also building more governing power in more states. This November, the first major elections since Trump took office are happening in Virginia. We have a chance to build the nation’s newest pro-democracy trifecta while laying the groundwork for the 2026 midterms.
We can’t predict what Trump will or won’t do. And to be clear, we’re not offering a solution that’s only about beating Trump.
We are offering an antidote to a lie the rightwing desperately wants our country to believe: that government can’t work for the people. We’re offering a pathway to prove that government can be effective and can tangibly improve lives.
Right now, state legislatures are the only place where we can reimagine a better future for all Americans — now is not the time to sit on the sidelines.
